Why filling up on healthy food from avocados to coconuts might be doing your body more harm than good

Experts say that excessive consumption of anything will put your body under strain to process it

We’ve all felt virtuous (and spent a small fortune) piling our trollies high with goji berries, coconut oil and avocados, or scoffing a bag of nuts instead of a biscuit.
But it might be time to step away from the cashews, because even when it comes to “healthy” foods, it seems you can have too much of a good thing.

“Excessive consumption of any one food, however ‘super’ it claims to be, puts your body under strain to process it,” says dietician and author of Unmasking Superfoods Jennifer Sygo.
“There are many people who think just because a food is placed in a health-food store they can eat it every day, and that’s just not the case.
"Many of my clients struggle with losing 5-10lb because they’re eating all the right things, but they’re eating too much of them.”
So here’s the good-for-you grub you might want to dial down on…

Avo-oh-no

It may be hugely Instagrammable, not to mention full of good fats for skin and heart health, but scoffing more than half an avocado a day is also a whole lot of “fat” fat.
“A single avocado contains 22g of fat – almost a third of your recommended intake for the whole day – and around 270 calories,” says Jennifer.

Eat traditional foods for health, function

Connection to nature is vital in our understanding about what to eat.

Too many of us have lost touch with the earth and that disconnection is destroying our health.

We place our manicured feet in fancy shoes that press on gas pedals rolling fast over paved streets.

We walk on varnished floors in slippery heals.

We ride escalators and elevators and spend our days floating above the earth.

We sleep stories up on beds perched upon hovering floors.

We eat food that has been processed to such a degree that it no longer reveals any semblance of the earthly product it once was.

No wonder life feels so precarious.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the the shiny packages and obscenely colored, artificially flavored foods we consume.

Forget calorie counting: Healthy food habits for your child

Two experts tell Sharon Ní Chonchúir how parents can ensure a healthy diet for their child. Watching portion size and the treats are both key

WE appear to be in a constant panic over children and their diets. Earlier this month there was widespread shock at the news that school uniforms with 46in waistlines are now being sold to Irish primary-school children. In Britain, health officials called for calories in popular foods to be cut amid concerns children are consuming too much.

Today, 25% of children in Ireland are overweight or obese. What should worried parents do? Should they try to cut back on their children’s calorie intake?

Dietician Sarah Keogh thinks not. “A child’s calorie needs vary so much,” she says. “They may go through a growth spurt or a time when they are doing a lot of exercise, which means they need more calories than at other times. Calorie counting can just make things difficult for parents.”

Official guidelines suggest that school-age children need between 1,600 and 2,500 calories a day, depending on their age, body weight, and activity levels. But instead of focusing on numbers, Orla Walsh, a dietician with the Dublin Nutrition Centre, thinks it might be better to look at the nutritional value of food.

Forget the chips; eating healthful lunches improves kids’ attention, energy levels

Candy. Chocolate chip cookies. Pancakes with smiley faces.

With the start of the new school year, parents can get answers like these when they ask their kids, “What do you want to eat for lunch?”

Most every parent knows that getting a child to eat healthfully can be difficult. Many children have tunnel vision when it comes to food, making it difficult for them to try new options — let alone healthier ones — in their lunchboxes.

“Fruits and vegetables can appear scary to kids, and to them it may not taste as good compared to saltier or sweeter alternatives,” said Jessica Buschmann, clinical dietitian at the sports medicine department at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. “But it’s important to expose healthy foods to kids early so they can form healthy, lifelong habits.”

Healthful eating has been shown to enhance academic performance in children. Kids who eat their fruits and vegetables have improved attention spans, energy levels and cognitive function, according to a study by the CDC.

Expo to put spotlight on healthy food, healthy life

Nutritional problems caused by an inadequate diet can be of many sorts, and when they affect a generation of youngsters, they can lower their learning capacities, thus compromising their futures, perpetuating a generational cycle of poverty and malnutrition, with severe consequences on both individuals and nations.

Need tips on how to get your kids to eat healthy?

(CNN) -- Don't let your kids get hooked on sugar. Agatha Achindu, mother of three and founder of Yummy Spoonfuls Organic Baby Food, said, "Sugar is in just about all packaged food these days, in one form or another."

She says you should banish soda and other sugary drinks from the household, read labels on the food you buy and don't get anything with added sugar.

You can help get children into healthy food by making food interesting. Lori Day, an educational pyschologist and consultant, said, "My main tip is to make food interesting if your child is naturally curious, enjoys science/nature and is willing to engage."

Get the children involved in the process of shopping and cooking. The host of Kitchen Chat, Margaret McSweeney, said, "A trip to the local farmers market or grocery store can be an adventure and connect them with the source of the food."

Kids make be more inclined to eat healthy food if you give them more choices. Ava Parnass, an infant-child psychotherapist, said, "Give them more room to choose as they get older."

Get creative in engaging your kids in healthy eating. McSweeney suggested presenting healthy food in a creative way, such as hosting a purple night. "Everyone dresses in purple for a purple meal. Menu items could include purple peppers, purple cauliflower, purple potatoes, grapes and/or eggplant," she said.

Be a model for your children. If you want them to eat healthy, you should eat healthy, too.

Lifestyle, not medicine, is key to good health

A new book outlines a 21-day lifestyle plan based on the example of Pioppi, an Italian village known for healthy living

As London prepared for the Olympics back in 2012, politicians and public policy figures expressed hope that the momentum of the Games would help spur interest in sports and health across communities. However, some critics took to media channels to highlight the hypocrisy at the heart of it all: that the Games’ biggest sponsors included McDonalds and Coca-Cola, not exactly the patron saints of healthy food.

Dr. Aseem Malhotra, an outspoken cardiologist, championed the call for such organisations to be banned from Olympic sponsorship, highlighting major diabetes and heart disease problems that existed in Newham, the East London Borough, where the Games were scheduled.

The junk food we loved as kids got a healthy makeover and might make it to Whole Foods

With Amazon acquiring Whole Foods, shoppers saw some immediate changes at the grocery store. And now, Frito-Lay, which is a division of PepsiCo, sees an opening for getting its products through the doors. While Frito-Lay snacks, like Cheetos, Doritos, and Lay’s potato chips, aren’t what you’d normally see in the aisle of Whole Foods, the company has launched its Simply line and PepsiCo wants Whole Foods shoppers to buy them.

Fortune reported that PepsiCo executive Jonathan McIntyre noted that its new Simply products, which are all-natural versions of Frito-Lay’s chip brands, meet the criteria to be sold at Whole Foods. The Simply products include white cheddar Cheetos puffs, white cheddar Doritos “tortilla chips,” and reduced fat Ruffles potato chips. These new chips have no artificial flavors or colors. And some of this junk food even has certified organic variations.

Healthy options urged for children’s after-school snacks

Grains and juice are what's on the menu for after-school snacks at SeeSaw Children's Place.

That's how Trina Beale, director of licensing and services, and the rest of SeeSaw's staff keep their students from growing hungry while making sure they adhere to healthy snack standards.

"We offer juice everyday," Beale said. "They do get juice, and we actually rotate snacks. They get mainly grains for the afternoon. They get things like Goldfish, graham crackers, animal crackers, Cheez-Its, a lot of crackers."

When it comes to after-school snacks, it's the healthy options that officials want young people to reach for.

WSU Dining Services now offers a new form of grab-and-go snacks called Bites, which are available at all the espresso bars and markets on campus.

Adam Koerner, assistant director of culinary operations, said the previous options for quick meals and snacks had a longer shelf life than Dining Services preferred. The products had lower quality than their previous provider Charlie’s Produce, and the culinary team decided they could do better themselves.
